Biography
R.M. Lakshika Maduwantha Rajapaksha is a Sri Lankan artist working from Bandarawela, in the central hill country. His practice is grounded in drawing: charcoal and white pastel built up slowly, layer upon layer, until light seems to rest on the surface of the paper. He also paints in oil, carrying the same patience and the same attention to light into colour.
Rajapaksha's work is driven less by spectacle than by feeling. He is drawn to the moments that pass almost unnoticed: a glance held a second too long, a breath of calm, the warmth of being seen by someone else. His figures are rarely posed. They are caught mid-thought, absorbed in tenderness, shyness, longing or quiet joy. The near-photographic precision of his hand serves that intimacy rather than display, slowing the viewer down until a fleeting instant feels lasting.
Nature is a constant presence in the work, never simply a backdrop. Leaves, flowers and filtered sunlight gather around his subjects as if sheltering them, reflecting a belief that the natural world is a source of gentleness and renewal. Light, for Rajapaksha, is emotional as much as it is optical: it reveals, comforts and transforms.
Working largely in monochrome, he draws feeling from the full range between deep black and pure white, treating shadow with the same care as light. Each piece becomes a small meditation on presence, on the beauty of ordinary human connection, and on the peace that comes from looking closely.
